this edit is fantastic but i also need people to know the original text says “what’s to keep me from becoming a god” which is pretty high up there in terms of funniest things for a child to say upon realizing he has free will

Alright, I think I like tumblr now.

A pun post crossed my dash, and I reblogged it with an equally bad pun in return. A couple of my followers find it funny, it’s a good day for everyone.

That was on July 7th.

Virality on Reddit was entirely algorithmic. You could garner a couple crossposts, but the success of a post was entirely dependent on whether or not it hit r/all–the main page of Reddit. If your post does that, it’s immediately exposed to 10x the number of people and immediately gets upvoted.

On my pun post, I get a couple reblogs. And those reblogs get a couple reblogs–nobody really adds any content to the post, it just gets a couple reblogs here and there.

There’s a specific chain of reblogs that I’d like to focus on. The most popular post on this chain has about 25 reblogs on it. Half the posts have three reblogs or fewer. Five posts in this chain have just one reblog total.

But the reblog chain keeps going. And going. It breaches containment many times over. And finally, after a chain THIRTY SIX posts long, at 9:30 AM, July 22nd this morning, it hits a popular account.

A Tumblr reblog graph. It shows "Original Post" and "My Addition" in the bottom right, and a long, winding path of reblogs leading to a popular post on the far leftALT

99% percent of the people who have seen the post–virtually unchanged from how it left my dash–have seen it because it was curated by 36 different people. That’s insane to me.

None of those 36 people know that they’re part of this chain. They saw a post, reblogged it, and moved on. If any one of these people had not reblogged, the post would have a fraction of the impact it has.

And yet, after two weeks, the post has effectively hit the main page of tumblr. It was picked up, only because people liked it enough to show it to their followers. There were no algorithms necessary.

You really, truly, cannot get this on any other website.

Reblog the reblogging post.

Like to ignore its wisdom.

Bad thoughts can’t touch me . I know so many Pokémon facts to replace any possible bad thoughts with.

“I’m a loser” —> the gen 2 moon ball was supposed to work better on Pokémon that evolved with the moon stone but the item ID was programmed wrong and so it only works better on Pokémon who evolve with a burn heal. Which is none. So it’s a normal pokeball, functionally

I stayed my hand from posting this one on Twitter, but I’ve been “Embroiled In Some Controversy” for the last 2 days gamers and it’s driving me fucking bozonkers.

I got to the last panel but I couldn’t get the text to fit nicely and then I realized it works better on its own with the subtext I think.

My 11-year-old couldn’t decide what flavor of ramen to make, so I told her to flip a coin. Heads for spicy chicken, tails for beef.

Taking my advice, she flipped a penny, and when it landed on tails she said “Wait! Wait! I did it wrong!”

I told her that she did it right, because the real reason for flipping a coin isn’t to let fate decide for you, but because when the coin is in the air, you will suddenly realize what you wanted in the first place.

I’m sure there’s a life lesson there somewhere…

But honestly, I have never known her to pass up spicy chicken.

Update: Yesterday, her brother asked her if she wanted a corn dog and she couldn’t decide, so again I told her to flip a coin. She did so, and without even looking which way it landed, she snatched the penny up and said “I want a corn dog”.

Okay something that bothers me is the fact physics is seen as the more prestigious of the three main sciences, with biology at the bottom and chemistry in the middle. Like. I doubt most people could name a famous biologist, but they could name 5 famous physicists. Why are Albert Einstein and Stephen hawking household names but Norman Borlaug and Jonas Salk aren’t?

Not to dismiss the accomplishments of Einstein or Hawking, or their genius, but their actual tangible contributions to society have been miniscule compared to that of Borlaug or Salk who have each saved LITERALLY hundreds of millions, if not billions, of lives each. Half the food on your plate was probably grown thanks to Borlaug and Salk is the reason half your siblings didn’t die of polio as a kid.

Sure Einsteins theory of relatively is important for modern satellite communications but really though how can it compare?

This is coming from someone who studied physics. I love physics, and years ago when i was at uni I looked down at biology and so did everyone else studying physics. And I know others did too. Retroactively of course I know this was so very wrong.

If society as a whole started treating biology with more respect then maybe more students would go into that field. If we had rockstars of medicine and agricultural science that were household names rather than just physicists? think of how many more lives could be saved, how many more lives could be improved.

I’m not saying physics isn’t important, and more scientists of any kind is always good, but proportionally I think societies priorities are a little skewd.

A black and white comic. Panel 1: Three stick figures are standing at podiums labelled Phys, Bio and Chem, and a host is holding a microphone. Phys is bald, Bio has long hair in an updo, Chem and the host have short hair. The host says "Welcome to the Degree-Off, where we determine which field is the best! Physics, wanna go first?" Physics says "Sure! I'd like to tell the story of Richard Feynman's Manhattan Project lockpicking pranks..." Panel 2: "... and as he said, 'All science is either physics or stamp collecting.' Thank you." The host says "Great! Bio, you wanna go next?" Bio says "Okay." Panel 3: Bio says "This is a graph of the death rate from infectious disease in this country." The graph shows a massive drop from 1900 to 2000. Panel 4: "The heroes of my field have slain one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse." Panel 5: Bio points aggressively at Physics. "While the heroes of your field gathered in the desert to make a new one." Panel 6: Physics says "... Jeez, what the hell? I thought this was supposed to be fun and lighthearted!" Bio says "You must have been thinking of stamp collecting."ALT
